editing photos can be quite a chore if you don’t have the right tools to make it easier. i just recently bought a new digital camera and while the pictures are magnificent on their own, there still comes a point in time where you wish you could tweak the photos a bit or organize your photos more efficiently. well here is my personal list of what’s the best of the best digital photography tools to help make your digital picture collection a bit more friendlier.

Developing & Editing Pictures:

Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom™ engages the professional photography community in a new way, giving you the opportunity to kick the tires and shape the feature set of a new tool being created just for you.

Importing, Organizing, Sharing, Editing & Slideshows:

Picasa is a free software download from Google that helps you:

  • Locate and organize all the photos on your computer.
  • Edit and add effects to your photos with a few simple clicks.
  • Share your photos with others through email, prints, and on the web: it’s fast, easy and free.

Resizing Images:

Microsoft Image Resizer PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a single right-click. Options include resizing multiple files at once, changing the resolution to portable handheld (320×480), small (640×480), medium (800×600), or large (1024×768). It will also allow you to resize images to a custom resolution.

Storing & Editing Metadata:

Microsoft Photo Info allows photographers to add, change and delete common “metadata” properties for digital photographs from inside Windows Explorer.

When installed, a new “Photo Info” item appears on the context menu for files selected in Windows Explorer. To use, simply select one or more image fiiles, right-click and choose “Photo Info” to open the Photo Info properties editor. You can edit metadata for files individually, or all together as a batch. Photo Info reads and writes metadata in IPTC and XMP formats (depending on file type). It also provides enhanced “hover tips” and additional sort properties for digital photographs in Windows Explorer.
